Job Description Position Summary: The Cultural Landscape Historian will provide professional cultural resources support for the evaluation, documentation, and management of nationally significant historic properties, including landscapes and associated cultural resources on Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB), and on other installations on Guam as needed. The position will lead and support Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) efforts, conduct, review, and update National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility, boundary evaluations, periods of significance, contributing and non-contributing resources, and the preparation and/or review and update of NRHP nomination documentation (NPS Form 10-900), conduct archival research, cultural landscape analysis, historic architecture investigations, GIS-based documentation, and field assessments to evaluate historic districts, airfields, structures, and landscape features associated with military aviation histories among many tasks, developing Historic Architectural Work Plans (HAWPs); integrating historical maps, aerial imagery, photographs, and documentary sources into resource evaluations; conducting field verification and inventory work; and preparing technical reports and NRHP documentation consistent with National Register guidance, Secretary of the Interior's Standards, and Guam State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) requirements. NRHP Documentation and Technical Report Preparation. Field Investigation, GIS, and Resource Documentation. Project Coordination and Agency Consultation. Decision Making: Use analytical skills and apply body of knowledge in archeological methods all in the context of supporting activities, and in consultation/collaboration with Project Director and Principal Investigator; follow Project Director’s SOPs, plans, work schedules and deadlines for ensuring project deliverables are met as planned. Must render assistance in the timeliest, sensitive, and discrete manner; conduct all interactions with DoD personnel and stakeholders in a professional and respectful manner, exercising excellent communication and conflict resolution skills. Supervision: May supervise other cultural resources specialists and/or field techs on site. Conditions of Employment: Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for all new hires). Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be willing to submit for NACI background check to obtain a DoD Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) card and Common Access Card (CAC). Must be legally eligible to work in the United States by the proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. Must hike and carry equipment weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds plus in hot tropical environment and on uneven terrain. Must be able to sustain long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven surfaces, recurring bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, digging, or similar activities are expected. Minimum Experience: Bachelor’s degree in architectural history, Historic Preservation, History, Public History, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field. Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in historic preservation, architectural history, cultural resources management, or cultural landscape documentation. Experience conducting historic architectural surveys, inventories, and evaluations of historic buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, or cultural resources. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and Adobe Acrobat. Demonstrated knowledge of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria and experience evaluating historic properties for National Register eligibility. Experience conducting archival and historical research and preparing technical reports, inventories, and cultural resources documentation. Experience utilizing GIS, GPS, aerial imagery, historical maps, and digital documentation methods to support cultural resources investigations. Preferred Qualifications: Masters in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, History, Public History, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience successfully nominating and listing properties in the NRHP. Experience with HABS/HAER documentation standards, GIS software, GPS equipment, databases, and digital field documentation methods.
